In September 2004, Ahlia University plans to inaugurate
its undergraduate programme in interior design.
Ahlia University envisions the programme to take
the form of a multidisciplinary course of study
in involving a medley of Cultural, Sociological,
Psychological, Economic, Historical, Fine Arts
and Technical disciplines including Computer-Aided
Design and Material Science. Fine Arts courses
revolve around drawing and drafting.
Within the instructional setting of design studios,
students learn about the dynamic interactions
between people and space in commercial, institutional,
hospitality, healthcare, retail and residential
settings. Students develop competency in specific
interior design disciplines in organizing space
in a variety of facilities in such a way as to
satisfy various users’ needs in light of
functional, material and aesthetic preferences.
It is worth underscoring that that the Ahlia undergraduate
programme in Interior Design is a branch NEITHER
of Engineering NOR of Architecture but stands
on its own as a unique field of study.
Graduates in the field of Interior Design can
look forward to exciting careers in the Gulf as
consultants to a variety of private and public
sector organizations, as well as individuals,
seeking to optimize the use of space or to work
directly as employees in companies, notably large
retail enterprises, where layout of space correlates
directly with sales volume.
Students of the Interior Design programme are
expected to meet the full panoply of University
and College requirements entailing a course of
study, together with programme requirements spanning
four years of university study equivalent to 132
credit hours.
