The inter-university soccer carnival was a novel
idea conceived and meticulously organized by a
dedicated group of motivated students of Ahlia
University aimed at promoting a healthy and harmonious
competition amongst the universities in Bahrain.
The AU Student Council, encouraged by the President
of Ahlia University, Prof. Abdulla Y. Al-Hawaj
to organize this event, brought the different
universities in the Kingdom of Bahrain on one
platform for the first time. Amongst the universities
that took part and fielded one or two teams in
the tournament, apart from Ahlia University, were
an eclectic potpourri of public and private universities
in Bahrain including: the University of Bahrain,
Arab Open University, BIBF(A), BIBF(B), The Royal
Police College(A), The Royal Police College(B),
Kingdom University, UCB (A), UCB(B), Gulf University,
NYIT(A), NYIT(B) and AMA University.
Providing a high energy venue for exciting football,
the stadium brimmed over with spectators who watched
nail-biting matches throughout the tournament.
Representatives of their respective universities,
the players provided a convincing display of their
football prowess in a short period of time. Based
on a knockout scheme, the tournament format produced
the very best from the players. All the universities
sported many good players, whose demonstration
of expertise made it difficult to single out any
one player as the best. Inevitably, one team triumphed
over the others and, BIBF, emerged victorious.
AMA University and The Royal Police College (B)
earned runner-up status as holding second and
third place ranking respectively. Providing the
spectators with a memorable match, the Ahlia University
team went down fighting during the knockout stage.
As for other accolades, the UCB(A) was adjudged
the best team whereas Sayed Adnan Mohammed of
Royal College (B) was recognized as the best player
of the tournament.
H.E. Shaikh Fawaz Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, awarded
the Ahlia University Soccer Tournament certificates
and medals to the winning teams. Many VIPs, including
Mr. Ahmed Salloom, Governor, Central Area, Kingdom
of Bahrain, and the Presidents of the various
universities were present during the course of
the tournament and cheered the players. The importance
of the tournament could be seen in the keen interest
displayed by the players of the different teams
and the spirit with which they played the game.
Overall, the tournament turned out to be a great
success and, for their pivotal role in organizing
the event, the Ahlia University Student Council
along with student volunteers, deserve commendation
and kudos.
